Wordle is a super popular online game created in 2021 by software developer Josh Wardle. Thus, the clever name Wordle!
Wordle’s challenge is to guess a 5-letter word using clues as to which letters are in the word and in which position they are in placed the word.
The Wordle game strategy is super simple: you are given 6 attempts at guessing a 5-letter secret word. Let’s get started with how to play Wordle step-by-step! ➡️
1.) Enter Any 5 Letter Word in the Top Row
The Wordle game is a 5 to 6 square grid. Once you get started, you will have 6 chances to guess the secret word.
Using the keyboard under the grid, enter any 5-letter word in the top row.

When you are satisfied with your first word guess, press the enter key. The letter tiles will then appear as gray, green, or yellow.
2.) Look For the Wordle Clues in the Colored Tiles
The tiles in the word will change color after each guess to give you clues to solve the game puzzle. The 3 colored tiles you will see are:
- Gray Tiles = Indicate that the letter is not anywhere in the word.
- Yellow Tiles = The letter is in the word but not in the correct location.
- Green Tiles = Indicate that the letter is in the word And in the exact location!
3.) Gray Letters Are Not Located Anywhere in the Word 🧐
In the example above, the correct secret word is: (CLUES). The letters “O” and “R” are located in the gray tiles because they do not appear anywhere within the secret word.
Thus, If the letter tile becomes gray, that means it does not appear anywhere in the Wordle word.
PRO TIP ✅
Skipping all of the gray letters in the next guess isn’t required.
If your next guess includes gray letters, that is okay as well (if you think it will help you guess the Wordle answer!)
4.) Yellow Letters Are in the Word But (Not in the Correct Location)🤔
As you can see, in the above screenshot, the letters “S” and “U” appear yellow.
This means that the secret word (CLUES) contains the letters “S” and “U” (but not as the 1st or 2nd letter).
When a letter tile turns yellow, it means the letter is in the word, but not in the right position within the Wordle word.
5.) Green Letters Are in the Word And in (Exactly the Correct Location!😎)
In the example above, the letter “S”appears in the exact location within the correct word which is (CLUES).
Thus, when a letter tile becomes green, it means that you’ve correctly guessed both the letter AND it’s location in the Wordle word.
6.) Keep Guessing Up to 5 More Times!
After each attempt to guess the secret word, the color coded tiles will give you clues for solving the Wordle puzzle.
